A mystery shopper is a customer who tests the employee on their customer service skills. When I worked at Waldenbooks years ago, I was tested by one. They rate you on how quickly they are acknowledged/greeted when they enter the store, the employee's manners, and helpfulness. Did you walk them to the section they sought? Did you put the (book) they were looking for in your hands? Offer to order it if it wasn't in stock and offer other titles that may be of interest? Were they given their receipt and thanked? I was rated 99 out of 100 possible points. Working at a small bookstore was fun in those days.

Mystery shoppers are not security. They don't wander around and see if customers and employees steal. The other poster was correct that it is very hard work and requires traveling.

Security (loss prevention) watches people. Mystery shoppers just shop, they don't watch anyone. But it is not a glamorous job. They get an assignment, they have to drive usually quite far, they buy one thing and then they go home & fill out a bunch of paperwork and try & get reimbursed. They make a few bucks (literally, probably not enough to even cover gas). And they only hire adults.
